You have reached the website for Tom Sullivan, candidate running to represent District 7A in the Minnesota House of Representatives. For those who do not know me, I will provide some information and background about myself to highlight my experience and long history in Duluth, MN.
I was born in the Twin Cities where my mother was a school teacher and my father was a probation officer. I attended college at the University of MN Twin Cities. During my schooling, I worked as an intern at Boys Totem Town where I supervised a group of adjudicated and sentenced juvenile delinquents. In this role, I worked closely with the St. Paul Police Department.
After college in 1973, I moved to Duluth from the Twin Cities. I was working for the telephone company N.W. Bell when I was transferred "up north" to be a District Traffic Supervisor for the 218 area code, which included supervising several hundred employees.
I left the security of working for a large regulated utility to pursue my love of performing and teaching the martial art of Taekwondo. This is when Karate North was born! At its peak, Karate North was taught in over 100 locations with thousands of students. In the 1980's, I was ranked in the top 20 fighters in the USA by Karate Illustrated Magazine.
In 1984, I built and operated Phase II Total Fitness in Downtown Duluth. Phase II not only served as a local fitness center for 15 years, but it also was the headquarters for Karate North. At Phase II's peak, it boasted more than 1,000 members.
I semi-retired from my beloved martial arts daily activities in the late '90s to pursue another lifelong passion of flying when I was offered a career as a Corporate Pilot and instructor at Cirrus Aircraft. After a tremendously successful career at Cirrus where I went from my first position to Chief Demo Pilot, Flight Instructor Demo Pilot, and finished my career with Cirrus as one of the top consistently producing salesman. I retired in a consolidation plan after finishing my last year with the most sales out of 22 sales pilots across the country.
I continue to work as a professional pilot. I currently work as a Corporate Pilot for 5 different companies and as a Certified Flight Instructor for both single- and multi-engine land and seaplanes. I have all of the fixed-wing ratings offered by the FAA, including all of the Certified Instructor ratings.
My wife Kathy and I have been married for 48 years. We have 4 daughters that were all born and raised right here in Duluth. From our 4 daughters, we are proud grandparents to 13 grandchildren. My wife and I have been members of The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic community for 47 years. During that time, I have served as an elected Parish Councilor, a Lector, and a Eucharistic Minister.
Outside of work and family, I was previously a volunteer ski patroller at Spirit Mountain for almost 20 years where I held several leadership positions. I am an avid hunter. I enjoy fishing, skiing, and snowmobiling. My wife and I moved to the Northland in 1973, and our love of Duluth has kept us here ever since!
